We’ve covered the “why” of strategy and the “how” of the fixes that get it moving. Now comes the part that makes it last: turning good intentions into a rhythm your team can grow into.
Strategy isn’t meant to be a one-time event. It’s a living practice — and like anything alive, it thrives when it’s tended to regularly. The goal isn’t to make your team “do strategy.” It’s to create the conditions where strategic thinking can take root and keep growing on its own.
Build the strategic muscle
Strategic thinking isn’t a personality trait; it’s a practice — and practices grow stronger with regular use. The more your team gets to exercise it, the more natural it becomes.
-
Make room in meetings: Look at your recurring meetings. When some of that time shifts from status updates to alignment — from what happened to what matters — strategy gets the space it needs to breathe. Even 20% of a meeting, redirected, can change the whole conversation.
-
Build in pause points: You don’t have to wait for the end-of-year review. A quarterly pause — a few hours away from the day-to-day, asking “are we still solving the right problems?” — lets the plan catch its breath and renew itself for the season ahead.
-
Keep strategy visible: When the plan lives on a shared page and shows up in everyday conversations and 1:1s, it stays in circulation. A visible strategy is one people can hold onto, question, and build on.
Use templates and routines
You don’t need a complex dashboard to make this work. You need a simple rhythm — something repeatable that keeps the strategy close to the work.
Try a simple Strategy-Sync template for your weekly check-in:
-
The North Star — one sentence: what are we driving toward this month?
-
The Wins — what progress have we made on that goal?
-
The Friction — what’s in the way, and how might we clear it together?
-
The Ask — what do we need from each other to move faster?
Fifteen minutes, once a week. Small enough to hold, regular enough to matter.
The bottom line
Strategy doesn’t have to fail — it just has to stay alive, aligned, and actionable.
Start with one fix and build from there. One routine, one conversation, one visible plan. Little by little, the practice takes root — and the strategy stops being a document you finished and becomes the work you do every day to get closer to where you want to be.
Let’s rework how you work.
